BLOCKED NOSE: DOCTOR, DO I HAVE A SINUS PROBLEM?

Many patients come to us with difficulty breathing through the nose, asking if they have a sinus problem. When patients present with symptoms they believe to be related to sinusitis, several other conditions might be the actual cause. Some of these conditions include:

INFECTIOUS CONDITIONS

VIRAL INFECTIONS

The common cold often culminates in a blocked nose, along with additional symptoms like coughing and a sore throat.

SINUSITIS (SINUS INFLAMMATION)

This condition can result in blockage of the nose, often accompanied by facial discomfort and a mucous discharge. Chronic Rhinosinusitis is diagnosed when it’s a long-term inflammation of the sinuses and nasal passages that can lead to prolonged symptoms.

ALLERGIC RHINITIS (HAY FEVER)

This is an allergic response to certain allergens, leading to symptoms like sneezing, itching, nasal congestion, and a runny nose.

SEASONAL ALLERGIES

Often presents with stuffy nose, excessive sneezing, watery nasal discharge, nasal and eye irritation as a result of allergies to certain grass or tree pollen.

PET-RELATED ALLERGENS

Exposure to pet dander can also lead to nasal blockage.

VASOMOTOR RHINITIS

Triggered by certain odours, foods, weather and temperature changes, or medications, it causes symptoms like thick nasal drip, congestion, and post-nasal drip.

NASAL POLYPS

These are painless soft growths inside the nasal passages or sinuses. They can block the nasal passages and cause symptoms similar to sinusitis.

NON-ALLERGIC RHINITIS

This is characterised by a runny nose and/or sneezing, and unlike allergic rhinitis, it isn’t caused by allergens. It can be triggered by certain foods, medications, changes in hormones, and other factors.

DEVIATED SEPTUM

The nasal septum is the wall between the nostrils that separates the two nasal passages. A deviation can led to breathing difficulties and often mimics the symptoms of sinusitis.

FOREIGN BODY IN THE NOSE

Especially common in children, a foreign object lodged in the nose can lead to nasal discharge, odour, or even breathing difficulties.

TUMOURS OF THE NOSE OR SINUSES

Though rare, benign, or malignant growths in the nose or sinuses can present with symptoms similar to more common conditions.

ENVIRONMENTAL ASPECTS

  • Tobacco Smoke: Inhalation of smoke can irritate and block the nasal airways.
  • Low Humidity: Extremely dry air can cause the nasal passages to become dry and blocked.

PREGNANCY-RELATED CHANGES

Hormonal shifts during pregnancy can cause a stuffy nose.

PHARMACEUTICAL SIDE EFFECTS

Certain medicines, including some antihypertensive agents and overused over the counter nasal decongestant drops or sprays can induce or exacerbate nasal congestion.
