The Growing Popularity of Fillers for Aging Earlobes : Everything You Need to Know

As we age, our skin undergoes numerous changes — fine lines, wrinkles, sagging, and thinning are some of the most common signs of aging. While we tend to focus on facial areas like the forehead, eyes, and mouth, one area that often gets overlooked is the earlobe. The earlobes, like other parts of the body, are susceptible to the effects of aging, and many people are now seeking ways to restore their youthful appearance. Enter dermal fillers for aging earlobes — a safe, non-surgical treatment that can rejuvenate this often-neglected area. In this blog post, Dr Sandeep will explore the causes of aging in earlobes, how fillers work, the benefits and risks of this treatment, and what you can expect during the procedure. What Do Youthful Earlobes Look Like? Youthful earlobes are often an overlooked yet important aspect of a youthful, well-balanced appearance. While we tend to focus on facial features like the eyes, lips, and cheeks when considering signs of aging, earlobes can also reveal a lot about the aging process. As we age, the earlobes lose volume, elasticity, and firmness, much like other areas of the face. So, what do youthful earlobes look like? Let us dive into the key characteristics that define youthful earlobes and how you can achieve or restore them. 1.      Plump and Rounded Shape One of the most noticeable characteristics of youthful earlobes is their plumpness and roundness. As we age, the skin on the earlobes loses fat and volume, causing them to appear thinner and more elongated. In contrast, youthful earlobes are firm and rounded, with a slight fullness that gives them a smooth and healthy appearance. The volume helps the earlobes maintain their shape and prevents them from sagging, making them appear more youthful and balanced in relation to the rest of the face. 2.       Smooth, Even Texture A youthful earlobe has a smooth, even texture without any noticeable wrinkles, creases, or irregularities. Over time, as collagen and elastin production decreases, the skin in the earlobes becomes thinner, which can lead to fine lines or the development of creases. Youthful earlobes are typically smooth and plump, with no signs of thinning or wrinkling. This smoothness contributes to an overall fresh and well-rested look. 3.      Firm and Lifted Appearance Earlobes that have not yet been affected by the gravitational pull of aging tend to remain firm and slightly lifted, rather than sagging or drooping. The firmness of a youthful earlobe reflects healthy skin and supportive tissue. As we age, the skin in the earlobes begins to lose its elasticity, which can cause them to sag or elongate. Youthful earlobes maintain a soft lift, creating a balanced proportion with the rest of the face. 4.      Minimal Stretching or Piercing Damage While some degree of stretching may be natural for those who wear heavy earrings or have multiple piercings, youthful earlobes generally have a smooth, intact appearance without any visible damage. The piercings, if present, are usually well-defined, without any signs of elongation or splitting. Over time, earrings, particularly heavy ones, can stretch the skin of the earlobe, causing them to elongate or lose their natural shape. Youthful earlobes typically exhibit a well-maintained and proportionate shape. 5.      Balanced and Symmetrical Shape Symmetry is one of the hallmarks of youth, and this applies to earlobes as well. Youthful earlobes typically exhibit a symmetrical, balanced shape that complements the rest of the facial features. They do not appear uneven or asymmetric, which can often be a result of age-related changes, wear and tear from jewellery, or previous injuries. Healthy, youthful earlobes align well with the contours of the face and contribute to an overall harmonious aesthetic. Why Do Earlobes Age? Earlobes are made up of soft tissue and lack the firm collagen structure found in other areas of the face. Over time, several factors contribute to the aging of the earlobes: 1.      Loss of Volume As we age, the production of collagen and elastin in the skin decreases. This results in thinner skin and a loss of volume in the earlobes, causing them to sag or appear droopy. 2.      Sun ExposurE Years of sun exposure can lead to skin damage and the breakdown of collagen, causing earlobes to lose their youthful plumpness and firmness. 3.      Piercings and Jewellery Wearing heavy earrings or ear jewellery over the years can stretch the earlobes and cause them to elongate or sag further. Sometimes, the hole created by piercings may stretch out, leading to an uneven or disfigured appearance. 4.      Genetics Just as genetics determine how your skin ages, they also play a role in the aging of the earlobes. Some people are more prone to early signs of aging in the earlobes than others. How Do Dermal Fillers Help? Dermal fillers are gel-like substances that are injected beneath the skin to restore lost volume, smooth wrinkles, and rejuvenate areas that have begun to sag. When used in the earlobes, fillers provide immediate volume restoration, lifting and firming the tissue to create a smoother, youthful look. Here’s how dermal fillers work to rejuvenate aging earlobes: 1.      Restoring Volume Fillers can replace the lost volume in the earlobe area, making them appear fuller, rounder, and more youthful. 2.      Smoothing Out Wrinkles and Creases Over time, earlobes can develop fine lines and creases. Fillers smooth out these imperfections, giving a more polished appearance. 3.      Correcting Piercing Damage If your earlobes have become stretched or damaged due to heavy earrings or multiple piercings, fillers can help restore their original shape and size. Sometimes ear lobe repair may be needed to aid in rejuvenation. 4.      Lifting and Firming The filler not only adds volume but also helps lift the earlobe, counteracting the sagging caused by aging or loss of skin elasticity. Why Dr Sandeep Prefers Hyaluronic Acid Fillers for Earlobes Dr Sandeep, a trusted specialist in aesthetic treatments, prefers to use hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers for earlobe rejuvenation due to several key benefits: 1.      Greater Compatibility with Skin Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring

He will choose the appropriate filler according to your aesthetic goals. PREPARATION The area to be treated is cleaned, and a topical anaesthetic may be applied to numb the area for greater comfort. INJECTION Using a fine needle or cannula, the filler is injected beneath the skin in the desired areas. SCULPTING Dr Sandeep will then sculpt the filler by gentle massage to ensure even distribution of the filler to achieve the desired shape and projection. POST-PROCEDURE Clients can usually return to their normal activities immediately, though minor swelling or bruising may occur. ADVANTAGES OF DERMAL FILLER INJECTION For those considering dermal fillers, understanding these benefits can help in making an informed decision. IMMEDIATE RESULTS One of the most appealing aspects of dermal fillers is the immediacy of the results. Clients often leave the clinic with visible improvements. MINIMALLY INVASIVE Unlike surgical procedures that require incisions and longer recovery periods, dermal fillers are minimally invasive. This makes them suitable for those hesitant about undergoing surgery. QUICK PROCEDURE A typical session with Dr Sandeep and his team usually lasts between 30 and 60 minutes, depending on the areas being treated, allowing clients to fit the procedure into their busy schedules. MINIMAL DOWNTIME Most clients can resume their daily activities almost immediately after the procedure. This is a significant advantage for those who cannot afford extended periods away from work or social commitments. NATURAL-LOOKING RESULTS Our team prides themselves on their ability to achieve natural-looking results. The art of dermal filler application lies in enhancing a person’s features subtly, without making it apparent that a cosmetic procedure has been done. VERSATILITY Dermal fillers can be used to treat a variety of concerns—from wrinkles and fine lines to volume loss and even minor reshaping of the nose or chin. This makes them a versatile tool in aesthetic medicine. TEMPORARY BUT LONG-LASTING Most dermal fillers offer temporary results that last several months or even up to a year or more, depending on the type of filler used. This allows clients to reassess their aesthetic goals periodically and adjust treatment as needed. REVERSIBLE Certain types of fillers, particularly those based on hyaluronic acid, can be reversed with an enzyme known as hyaluronidase. This offers a safety net in case of undesired results or complications. SAFETY When administered by qualified professionals like Dr Sandeep, dermal fillers have a strong safety profile. Adverse reactions are generally rare and usually mild if they do occur. COST-EFFECTIVENESS Compared to surgical solutions, dermal fillers often represent a more cost-effective way to achieve aesthetic goals. DISADVANTAGES AND LIMITATIONS OF DERMAL FILLER INJECTION While there are numerous advantages to dermal filler treatments, there are also limitations and disadvantages that prospective clients should consider. LIMITATIONS ON LONGEVITY Dermal fillers offer temporary results that can last several months to a couple of years, depending on the type of filler used. Clients will need periodic treatments to maintain the effects. INEFFECTIVENESS FOR SEVERE SAGGING While dermal fillers are versatile, they cannot address all aesthetic concerns. For example, they cannot significantly reduce excess skin and may not be effective for treating severe skin sagging or laxity. Their use for such indications can lead to obviously unnatural results. Surgical intervention such as a facelift is often more suitable for such cases. RISK OF ASYMMETRY If the filler is not evenly distributed or properly sculpted, it can result in facial asymmetry. Expertise in application is crucial to avoid this outcome. TEMPORARY BRUISING OR SWELLING Some clients may experience bruising, swelling, or redness at the injection site, though these side effects are generally temporary. RISK OF LUMPS OR BUMPS Improper application can lead to lumps or bumps under the skin, requiring additional treatment to correct. REVERSIBILITY IS NOT UNIVERSAL While hyaluronic acid-based fillers can be reversed, other types of fillers are permanent and cannot be easily removed. INDIVIDUAL VARIATION Results can vary from person to person based on skin type, age, and other factors, making it crucial to have realistic expectations. FINANCIAL CONSIDERATIONS Although less expensive than surgical alternatives, the cost of maintaining the results through regular treatments can add up over time. POTENTIAL RISKS AND COMPLICATIONS While they are generally considered safe, there are potential risks and side effects associated with filler injections. Here are some of the potential risks: Immediate Reactions: Swelling: The treated area may

Liquid Rhinoplasty

LIQUID RHINOPLASTY Refine Your Profile, No Surgery Required: Experience Liquid Rhinoplasty! Refine Your Profile, No Surgery Required: Experience Liquid Rhinoplasty! ‘Injectable nose jobs’, more formally known as liquid rhinoplasty or injection rhinoplasty, are non-surgical procedures that use dermal fillers to modify the nose’s shape or address certain imperfections or smooth out irregularities without the need for invasive surgery. Instead of undergoing surgery, patients can see changes through injections, making it a popular choice for those seeking less invasive options. However, while it offers a quick fix, it’s essential to understand its scope, benefits, and limitations. BENEFITS OF ‘LIQUID RHINOPLASTY Minimally Invasive: No surgery is involved, which means no incisions, scars, or prolonged recovery time. Immediate Results: Changes are visible right after the procedure. Reversible: If the results are not satisfactory, certain fillers can be dissolved using an enzyme called hyaluronidase. Short Procedure Time: Typically takes less than an hour. LIMITATIONS OF LIQUID RHINOPLASTY Temporary: The results are not permanent. Depending on the filler used, results can last from 6 months to 2 years. Limited Scope: Liquid rhinoplasty can fill in and reshape, but it can’t reduce the size of the nose or correct significant structural issues or nasal blockage. Risk of Complications: Though rare, there can be complications like vascular occlusion where the filler blocks a blood vessel leading to serious complications like loss of skin and scarring and rarely blindness. IDEAL CANDIDATES Individuals looking for subtle changes or those who are considering surgical rhinoplasty and want to “test” potential changes might find liquid rhinoplasty beneficial. It’s also suitable for those who want a quick fix without the downtime associated with surgery. LIQUID RHINOPLASTY PROCEDURE Using injectable fillers, usually made of hyaluronic acid (like Juvederm or Restylane), specific areas of the nose are targeted to achieve desired changes. This can include filling in depressions, smoothing out bumps, augmenting the dorsum or even lifting the tip of the nose. Here’s a step-by-step breakdown of the procedure: CONSULTATION The first step involves a thorough consultation with a qualified practitioner. During this session, the patient’s goals, the suitability of the procedure, potential risks, and expected outcomes are discussed. INFORMED CONSENT The patient is informed about the risks, benefits, potential complications, and the alternative management options available for their particular needs. PREPARATION The nose and surrounding area are cleaned with an antiseptic solution to minimize the risk of infection. A topical numbing cream may be applied to the nose to reduce discomfort during the injection process. MARKING Dr Sandeep may mark specific points on the nose to guide the injection process and ensure precision. INJECTION Using a fine needle or cannula, the chosen dermal filler (commonly hyaluronic acid-based fillers like Juvederm or Restylane) is carefully injected into precise locations on the nose. The practitioner may mould or shape the filler by gently massaging the area. The amount of filler used, and the injection points will vary based on the patient’s desired outcome. For instance, fillers can be used to smooth out a dorsal hump, lift the nasal tip, or fill in depressions. The procedure usually takes less than an hour. POST-INJECTION Once the desired shape is achieved, the practitioner will clean off any markings. Cold compresses might be applied to reduce potential swelling or bruising. POST-PROCEDURE INSTRUCTIONS Patients are typically advised to avoid strenuous activities, direct sun exposure, and wearing glasses or sunglasses that rest on the nose for a specified period. Touching or pressing the nose should be minimized to allow the filler to settle. FOLLOW-UP A follow-up appointment may be scheduled to assess the results, address any concerns, and determine if additional filler or adjustments are needed. RESULTS Results are immediate, but there might be some initial swelling or bruising. The results of liquid rhinoplasty are temporary, typically lasting between 6 months to 2 years, depending on the filler used and individual factors, the filler will eventually be absorbed by the body. This means the procedure will need to be repeated to maintain the desired results. POTENTIAL RISKS AND COMPLICATIONS While liquid rhinoplasty, or non-surgical nose job, is a less invasive alternative to traditional rhinoplasty, it is not without risks. Here are some potential complications and risks associated with the procedure: Swelling and Bruising: It’s common to experience some swelling or bruising at the injection sites, which usually subsides within a few days. Asymmetry: There’s a possibility that the filler may not be distributed evenly, leading to an asymmetrical appearance. Infection: As with any procedure that breaks the skin, there’s a risk of infection, although it’s relatively rare. Nodule Formation: Small lumps or nodules can form if the filler clumps together or if too much filler is injected. Overcorrection: Too much filler can lead to an overcorrected or unnatural appearance. Migration: The filler can sometimes move from the original injection site, leading to unwanted changes in the nose’s shape. Vascular Complications: One of the more serious risks is the inadvertent injection of filler into blood vessels. This can lead to complications like vascular occlusion, where the filler blocks a blood vessel. In rare cases, this can cause skin necrosis (death of skin tissue) or even blindness. Scarring: In rare cases, the procedure can lead to scarring, especially if there’s an infection or skin necrosis. Allergic Reactions: Some people might have allergic reactions to the filler material, though this is rare with hyaluronic acid-based fillers. Skin Discoloration: There can be a change in skin colour (either hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation) at the injection site. Sometimes there may be a bluish hue visible through the skin (Tyndall effect). If the Tyndall effect occurs after a filler treatment, it can be addressed by dissolving the filler with an enzyme called hyaluronidase and then possibly re-injecting at a deeper level or using a different type of filler. Adverse Reaction to Filler Dissolution: If there’s a need to dissolve the filler using hyaluronidase (an enzyme that breaks down hyaluronic acid), there’s a small risk of an adverse reaction to the enzyme. It’s crucial to choose a qualified

Sculptra

SCULPTRA WHAT IS SCULPTRA? Sculptra (PLLA- Poly L Lactic Acid), is a collagen biostimulator approved by the US FDA since 2004. After injection, Sculptra stimulates skin cells to produce new collagen and elastin – this improves skin quality and results in firmer, lifted skin with less fine lines and sagging. Common treatment areas include the temple, cheeks, nasolabial fold and chin. HOW DOES SCULPTRA WORK? Sculptra harnesses the intrinsic ability of the skin to rejuvenate itself – PLLA microspheres attract skin fibroblasts to jump start the process of collagen production. The process takes time, with visible results seen only 1-3 months after a treatment. Results are long lasting, with clinical studies showing results lasting over 25 months WHY CHOOSE SCULPTRA? Sculptra is ideal for clients who are seeking rejuvenation but wish for a more subtle and natural look. As compared to hyaluronic acid fillers where “what you see is what you get”, the results from Sculptra occur gradually over 1-3 months and can last up to 24 months. While Sculptra costs more than a hyaluronic acid filler, it may be more cost effective given the long-lasting effects. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS HOW LONG DOES A TREATMENT TAKE? A Sculptra treatment takes 30-45 minutes. Topical anaesthetic will be applied beforehand for 15-20 minutes. ANY DOWNTIME? No downtime, and clients can return to normal activity right away. There will be mild swelling at injection areas which resolve within 2-3 days. Clients are advised to massage the treated area daily for 5 days. HOW OFTEN ARE TREATMENTS REQUIRED? The clinical effect from Sculptra treatments can last for up to 24 months1,2. Repeat treatments can be performed at 12-24 month intervals. HOW MANY VIALS OF SCULPTRA ARE REQUIRED? This depends on the client and will be discussed during the consultation, with factors such as treatment areas, treatment expectations and budget being taken into consideration and a treatment plan agreed upon. A rule of thumb would be 1 vial of Sculptra for every decade of age of the client. Typically, 1-2 vials of Sculptra is used during a treatment session. ELEVATE YOUR LOOK WITH SCULPTRA TREATMENTS BY DR SANDEEP Rediscover the foundation of youth with Sculptra, the acclaimed collagen biostimulator that has been reshaping the aesthetic world since 2004. Ellanse Filler

ELLANSE FILLER IN SINGAPORE WHAT IS ELLANSE? Ellanse is a collagen stimulating filler that provides immediate and long-lasting results. It is used to reverse facial aging and improve loose skin by restoring collagen and volume that has been lost due to the aging process. It is used to lift and sculpt areas of the face including the forehead, temples, cheeks, nasolabial fold, and chin. In recent years it has been gaining popularity especially in the Chinese market, where it is known as 少女针 “young woman’s injection”. Unlike most other dermal fillers which contain hyaluronic acid and last for 9-12 months, Ellanse contains Polycaprolactone (PCL) – a potent collagen stimulator that promotes new collagen formation in the area of treatment, with long lasting results of over 24 months. The ideal candidate for Ellanse is someone who has had hyaluronic acid based dermal fillers before, liked the result and is seeking a treatment that is longer lasting. HOW DOES ELLANSE WORK? Ellanse is a dermal filler that contains 30% Polycaprolactone (PCL) microspheres suspended in a 70% Carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) gel carrier. The CMC gel provides an immediate but short-lived (8-12 weeks) volume restoration of the treated area, while the PCL microspheres break down over the next 8-12 weeks to stimulate collagen production in the skin to provide a natural and long-lasting (1-4 years) improvement in facial volume and skin quality. The PCL microspheres in Ellanse have a unique property – they stimulate the production of collagen, a protein that aids in the preservation of skin structure and elasticity. Over time, as the PCL microspheres gradually break down, they trigger the body’s natural collagen production process. This collagen production helps to rejuvenate and restore the skin from within. The collagen that is produced as a result of Ellanse treatment replaces the gel carrier, providing long-lasting improvements to the treated area. The combination of immediate volumization and ongoing collagen stimulation creates a natural and rejuvenated appearance.   WHO IS A SUITABLE CANDIDATE FOR ELLANSE? Ellanse is suitable for clients who wish to look like their younger selves by reversing age related facial volume loss and skin laxity. WHAT ARE THE CONTRAINDICATIONS FOR ELLANASE? Contraindications include major medical and dermatological disease, presence of permanent facial implant, active skin infection and pregnancy. WHY IS ELLANSE THE KEY TO FACIAL REJUVENATION? Ellanse has the unique ability to naturally regenerate volume in the skin that helps restore a youthful appearance.  The newly produced collagen helps to rejuvenate and restore the skin from within, leading to long-lasting results.  Ellanse combines immediate volumization with the ongoing stimulation of collagen production. By addressing both volume loss and collagen depletion, Ellanse offers comprehensive rejuvenation benefits. Ellanse has gained approval from regulatory bodies such as the MHRA in the UK and the HSA in Singapore. This ensures that it meets stringent safety and efficacy standards, providing patients with confidence in its use for facial rejuvenation. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS SHOULD I GO FOR ELLANSE OR HYALURONIC ACID (HA) BASED FILLERS? Ellanse delivers a long-lasting result, making it more cost effective as compared to HA fillers. HA based fillers are recommended for delicate areas such as the lips and undereye. HA based fillers can be dissolved with the administration of hyaluronidase, while Ellanse cannot be dissolved. For clients undergoing a filler treatment for the first time, it is better to start with HA fillers. For clients who have had several treatments with HA fillers and are looking for a more lasting result, Ellanse would be a good option. ELLANSE OR SCULPTRA? Both are collagen stimulators with several key differences- Ellanse contains PCL microspheres in CMC carrier gel while Sculptra contains Poly L Lactic Acid (PLLA), Ellanse only requires a single treatment while Sculptra requires 2-3 treatments, Ellanse gives an immediate result while Sculptra gives a delayed result (1-2 months later), Sculptra requires regular massage for 5 days after injection to reduce risk of nodule formation. Both can be used concurrently, Ellanse injected into the deeper layers and Sculptra being used more superficially for skin rejuvenation. HOW MANY SYRINGES DO I NEED? A typical client in their late 30s or 40s will need 4 to 8 syringes (each syringe contains 1cc of product) for full face rejuvenation. The treatment is highly customised to the individual after a detailed discussion. IS ELLANSE SAFE? It has been approved for use by medical professionals by Singapore’s HSA and Europe’s CE Mark. Polycaprolactone (PCL) and Carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) are classified as Generally Regarded as Safe substances due to their long history of use in medical implants such as sutures. HOW MUCH DOES ELLANSE COST? The price of Ellanse is $1200 per 1ml syringe ala carte, $1100 per syringe (package of 4 syringes), $1000 per syringe (package of 8 syringes). Prices are nett, inclusive of GST. WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF ELLANSE? Ellanse restores a youthful appearance by providing immediate facial volume to areas which have been affected by age related volume loss such as the cheeks, temples, forehead, and chin. It stimulates collagen to provide a long lasting and natural effect, with firming and tightening of the skin. HOW DOES ELLANSE DIFFER FROM OTHER DERMAL FILLERS? The usual dermal filler contains Hyaluronic acid (HA)- which is a gel like substance. Ellanse is longer lasting than HA based dermal fillers and provides an improvement in skin quality from the collagen stimulation. WHAT AREAS CAN BE TREATED WITH ELLANSE? Common treatment areas include the cheeks, laugh lines (nasolabial fold), chin, temple, forehead. Areas which cannot be treated include the nose and lips. HOW LONG DOES THE TREATMENT TAKE? Usually less than 1 hour. IS THE PROCEDURE PAINFUL? Topical anaesthetic will be applied beforehand. In certain cases, local anaesthetic can also be injected to the treatment area. IS THERE ANY DOWNTIME AFTER THE TREATMENT? There is no downtime and clients can resume normal activity right away. Expect mild swelling in the treated area for a few days. HOW LONG DO THE RESULTS OF ELLANSE LAST? 18-24 months. ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS ASSOCIATED WITH ELLANSE?
