THYROID LUMPS OR NODULES TREATMENT SINGAPORE
Dr Sandeep Uppal and his team at The ENT Clinic frequently address concerns about thyroid lumps. These lumps can be a source of anxiety for patients, but it’s important to note that most thyroid nodules are benign and not cancerous.
THYROID NODULES DEFINITION
Thyroid nodules are abnormal growths that form within the thyroid gland, located at the base of the neck. These nodules can vary in size and may be nodules, cysts or growths in the thyroid gland.

CAUSES OF THYROID NODULES
Iodine Deficiency
- Iodine is an essential nutrient that the thyroid uses to produce hormones.
- When iodine levels are low, the thyroid may develop nodules as it tries to compensate for the deficiency.
- Iodine deficiency is more common in areas where iodized salt is not commonly used, although it’s less prevalent in developed countries.
BENIGN GROWTHS
This category includes a range of non-cancerous growths such as benign thyroid tumours, thyroid cysts, and nodules.
- Benign thyroid tumours are solid growths that do not spread to other parts of the body.
- Thyroid cysts are fluid-filled sacs that may arise within the gland.
- Nodules are lumps that are usually non-cancerous but may sometimes produce excess thyroid hormones, leading to hyperthyroidism.
THYROID CANCERS
- Although rare, some thyroid nodules may be malignant or cancerous.
- These cancerous nodules are often discovered during routine examinations or may be identified due to rapid growth and other alarming symptoms.
- A biopsy is usually performed to determine the malignancy of the nodule.
COMMON SYMPTOMS
PHYSICAL MANIFESTATIONS
Lump
The most common and noticeable symptom is a lump at the front of the lower neck, which often represents the thyroid nodule itself. Larger nodules can become a cosmetic concern if they are visible.
Difficulty Swallowing
In some instances, particularly when the nodule is large, patients may experience difficulty swallowing due to the nodule pressing against the food pipe (oesophagus).
Hoarseness
Large nodules may also press against the voice box or compress the nerve that supplies the muscles of the voice box, leading to hoarseness or a change in voice.
Difficulty Breathing
In some cases, especially when a thyroid nodule is particularly large or positioned in a way that it compresses the trachea (windpipe), patients may experience difficulty breathing. This can manifest as shortness of breath, especially when lying down, or a feeling of tightness in the throat.
Patients who experience difficulty breathing in conjunction with a lump in the neck should seek immediate medical attention. This symptom can be indicative of a more urgent medical issue that may require prompt diagnosis and treatment.
HORMONAL SYMPTOMS
Weight Loss
Some thyroid nodules may produce excess thyroid hormones, leading to an increased metabolic rate and consequent weight loss.
Rapid Heartbeat
Excess thyroid hormones can also stimulate the heart, causing a rapid or irregular heartbeat (Palpitations).
